Diatomaceous Earth Filter

A diatomaceous earth filter is a precision solid-liquid separation device that uses diatomaceous earth as its core filter aid and incorporates vacuum drum continuous filtration technology.

A diatomaceous earth filter is a precision solid-liquid separation device that uses diatomaceous earth as its core filter aid and incorporates vacuum drum continuous filtration technology. By utilizing a vacuum environment, the equipment evenly pre-coats the drum surface with diatomaceous earth to form a filter layer, thereby achieving highly efficient solid-liquid separation. It offers advantages such as high filtration precision, high processing capacity, a high degree of automation, and low operating costs, and is widely used in industries with stringent filtration requirements, including food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, and chemical and environmental protection.

Working Principle of the Diatomaceous Earth Filter

The diatomaceous earth vacuum drum filter utilizes a stable vacuum environment created within the equipment. A slurry made by mixing diatomaceous earth with the raw liquid in a specific ratio is evenly applied to the drum filter surface via a specialized pre-coating system, forming a dense and highly permeable diatomaceous earth filter layer. During the filtration process, the raw liquid permeates the filter layer under vacuum suction, and solid impurities such as proteins, dextrins, microorganisms, and fine particles are efficiently retained by the filter layer. As the drum continues to rotate, the filter cake containing the adsorbed impurities is peeled off layer by layer by cutting blades during rotation. Simultaneously, the backwash system regenerates the filter layer, ultimately yielding a filtrate with high clarity and purity that meets specifications, thereby completing the continuous solid-liquid separation process.

Product Features

1. Diatomaceous Earth-Optimized Design

Dedicated Pre-coating System: Equipped with a specialized pre-coating tank and mixing device to ensure stable concentration, uniform distribution, and precise, controllable thickness of the diatomaceous earth slurry.

Optimized Filter Surface Technology: The drum filter surface employs a fully welded wedge-wire winding process, creating a uniform slit structure that matches the characteristics of diatomaceous earth particles. This ensures strong adhesion of the filter layer while facilitating cake stripping and cleaning/regeneration.

Corrosion-Resistant and Sanitary Materials: All components in contact with diatomaceous earth and slurry are made of 304/316L stainless steel, which withstands the abrasive nature of diatomaceous earth and the corrosive properties of the slurry, and complies with food and pharmaceutical hygiene standards.

2. Core Filtration Performance Advantages

High-Precision Filtration: Leveraging the porous structure of diatomaceous earth, the filtration precision is consistently maintained at 1–5 μm, effectively removing impurities such as suspended solids, bacteria, and colloids, resulting in highly clarified filtrate.

High and Stable Throughput: The diatomaceous earth filter layer offers high permeability. Combined with continuous vacuum suction technology, the processing capacity per unit filtration area is significantly higher than that of conventional filtration equipment. Additionally, throughput degradation is slow during long-term operation, ensuring production continuity.

Controllable Filter Cake: By adjusting the diatomaceous earth pre-coating amount, drum rotation speed, and vacuum level, the filter cake thickness (2–10 mm) and moisture content (as low as below 30% for food/pharmaceutical applications) can be precisely controlled to meet the requirements of different materials.

3. Overall Equipment Features

Continuous Automation: Utilizes a fully automated PLC control system to achieve continuous operation throughout the entire process—including pre-coating, filtration, dewatering, discharge, and cleaning—without the need for frequent manual intervention, making it suitable for large-scale production scenarios.

Compact Design: The integrated drum design reduces the footprint by 40% compared to traditional filter presses, offering flexible installation options and making it suitable for workshops with limited space.

Easy Maintenance and Low Wear: The diatomaceous earth filter layer can be quickly regenerated via backwashing and scraper discharge. The filter cloth and drum are easy to clean, resulting in low maintenance costs and a long service life.

Superior Filtration For Demanding Applications

 High-Precision Clarification
In applications with stringent purity requirements—such as in the food and pharmaceutical industries—the diatomaceous earth filter bed effectively retains impurities and microorganisms, meeting sterile filtration standards and ensuring product safety.

 High-Efficiency Continuous Processing
The continuous rotation of the vacuum drum combined with the stable filtration provided by diatomaceous earth enables 24-hour uninterrupted operation. Processing efficiency is 3–5 times that of plate-and-frame filter presses, making it ideal for large-scale continuous production lines.

Low Energy Consumption and High Recovery Rate

The vacuum system features low energy consumption, and combined with the high permeability of diatomaceous earth, energy consumption per unit of filtrate processed is reduced by 15%–20% compared to pressure filters. Diatomaceous earth aids in retaining fine solid particles, achieving a solid-phase recovery rate of over 95%, thereby reducing material loss and lowering production costs and environmental impact.

Applications:

1. Food and Beverage Industry (Core Applications)

Alcoholic Beverages: Clarification and filtration of beer, wine, baijiu, and huangjiu to remove yeast, proteins, and impurities, thereby enhancing clarity and flavor stability while extending shelf life.

Beverages: Filtration of fruit juices, tea beverages, and syrups to prevent cloudiness and sedimentation during storage, while maximizing the retention of nutritional content and taste.

Condiments: Clarification of soy sauce, vinegar, and liquid monosodium glutamate to remove suspended solids and impurities, thereby improving product quality.

2. Pharmaceutical and Biotech Industry

Pharmaceutical Intermediates: Filtration and purification of antibiotics, vitamins, and traditional Chinese medicine extracts to remove impurities and microorganisms, meeting GMP cleanliness requirements.

Biological Products: Fine filtration of plasma and vaccine solutions to ensure product safety and purity.

3. Chemical and Environmental Protection Industry

Chemical Mother Liquors: Clarification of solutions such as resins, organic acids, and alcohols to recover active ingredients and improve product purity.

Industrial Wastewater: Treatment of wastewater containing suspended solids, electroplating wastewater, and textile dyeing wastewater to remove suspended solids and heavy metals, enabling wastewater reuse or compliant discharge.

Mining: Dehydration of mineral concentrates and tailings slurry. Using diatomaceous earth as an aid to improve fine particle recovery rates, reduce filter cake moisture content, and lower solid waste disposal costs.
